A Theater for All Seasons

blackbird guthrie theater

I spent one night of my Thanksgiving weekend at the Guthrie [www.guthrietheater.org], seeing the play Blackbird. The “dream factory”-like building on the Mississippi truly is an astounding place, one that I think grows in appreciation during the holiday season.
Crowds of people gather inside (and away from the chill) to celebrate the season with everything from the annual holiday revue of A Christmas Carol to a fancy martini. When I was there, a male chorus sang Christmas ditties in the lobby. It was all really quite festive.

The play I saw, however, was of a heavier subject. And there lies the beauty of the Guthrie: not only does it host crowd-pleasing, traditional performances, but also small, profoundly thought-provoking plays. From its famous Wuertle Thrust Stage to its 250-seat Dowling Studio (where the 2 man show Blackbird is shown), the theater really does offer something for everyone.

Food, Glorious (Minneapolis) Food

cafe brenda organic the good earth vegetarian

I’d like to express my love for the variety of great places in Minneapolis that are welcoming to vegetarians and the food-conscious. Yes, I’ve outed myself—I don’t eat meat of the mammal variety.

One of my all-time favorites is The Good Earth at the Galleria in Edina. The food is always good, and the place is always great for a small family gathering. I’m a big fan of their fresh-squeezed fruit juices, especially “Strawberry Fields” (and no, it’s not only because I’m a big Fab Four fan). Whenever I go (which is probably monthly), I’m always a sucker for their vegetarian enchiladas and their unconventional Greek salad.

The meat-eaters I associate with always find something tasty to eat at the Earth too; it’s one of those restaurants that you’ll leave feeling good about yourself and your food choices (unlike, say, that time at Taste of Minnesota when you ate 3 helpings of cheese curds).
